Ladies and Gents the moment we’ve all been waiting for…. The Joe Rogan Experience featured Kanye West on the latest episode. What does that mean for you? 4.5 Wonderful hours of podcast (yes, this includes the 1.5 hours of Group Chat) to round out your Monday.
In case you’re like me, and your Monday is jammed packed with work emails, binge-watching Netflix and trying to convince yourself you’ll go to the gym, then we’ve got you covered. Below are the top 5 takeaways from the interview from our crew:
1. What do an artist, a presidential candidate and an engineer have in common? They’re all Kanye West.
Is Ye a genius? Maybe? Prior to this interview, I would’ve said no but it is clear the man is on a “different wavelength” as Rogan puts it. It’s possible his charisma is what changed my opinion but who knows? In the interview West and Rogan dive into West’s opinions on racism in America, why he’s prioritizing his relationship with God over the music industry, and why he’s running for president. The most important take away, though, is the way that Kanye deconstructs social and industrial structures to, in his opinion, form a better community. He references the pandemic as opening society’s eyes to new forms of currency, such as relationships or religion, and what he’s recognized is more important in his life opposed to money. Is Kanye going to lead us into the next renaissance or is it all just talk?
2. Kanye’s determined.
As you all know, Kanye is a religious guy. He dives into this on a deeper level during the interview. He goes on to say how when he was younger, he was religious but lost his way, being found again when God literally “called him up” and said “I need you”. West mentions serving God his true calling going through the details of why he decided to quit the music industry. He devoted his life for a year to God ensuring not to miss a Sunday service, until the ‘rona. Throughout his career Kanye has been able to accomplish incredible feats like overcoming a life changing accident in ’02, overcoming a slew of positive and negative press and accepting a bipolar diagnosis. He attributes his successes to his ability to deconstruct constructs like we mentioned, and also his support from God to accomplish these goals. He also references that “his taste” is the answer to many of his, and America’s problem “Anything I go into — producing, rap, homes, clothing, anything — once I’m given the right information, I apply my taste. And I have the best taste on the planet.”
While he goes into what has supported him throughout his life, I can’t help but wonder if all of this is just a symptom of Kanye being an incredibly determined individual. Through reviewing his history and creative process it’s clear that West gets what he wants through passion and determination. Though he may not see it this way, it’s clear to the rest of us.
3. Got a peak into Kanye’s mind.
As Ye states, he thinks 3 dimensionally. So what does that mean? I’m just as lost as you are…. He explains the way his mind thinks as an analogy for good music or food—multi-faceted. There’s levels to it and in order to speak the full thought it needs to be described. After following him on his explanation and Joe’s feedback I think I finally got it! Joe alludes to people thinking something is wrong with him and how that’s simply not the case. Ye’s a great storyteller and if you can follow him along the journey there’s actually valuable information mixed in there. Again, he might be the modern renaissance man.
4. He’s got big plans.
There are a few different projects West is working on: running for president, breaking down the walls of the music industry, building his own university for choral students to practice and develop their skills, a colosseum where thousands of people can come and worship, and self-sustainable compound. We already mentioned he’s determined, but I’m really curious to see how all of this will play out… seems like a tall order for just one person. Perhaps that’s just my 1-dimensional thinking? We mentioned earlier one of the talking points from this podcast is Kanye’s determination. He is someone who knows how to set goals and accomplish them even referencing being $50 million in debt in 2016 and claiming at that time he’d become a billionaire by 2020. Of course, that was something he achieved.
While we wait for this to play out over the course of the next few years, I can’t help but wonder if Kanye is distributing his resources in a productive way. We know he used to spend mad money on the production of his concerts, and this same type of energy has been redirected towards Sunday Service. Some may argue Kanye is a creative genius, is his creativity enough to revolutionize society the way he claims?
5. Joe Rogan is an incredible interviewer.
Through the rollercoaster of an interview, which was a bit difficult to follow at times, it’s clear that Joe Rogan knew 2 things: 1. What he was getting into and 2. How to prepare for it. For many, this type of an open-ended interview with West could have been disastrous. Instead, Rogan was capable of keeping his composure and guide the interview in the best way possible. As the guys have mentioned on the pod before, he’s able to distance himself from the actual topic of conversation, or any real personal opinion, to get to the root of the interview If you’re looking to start your own podcast pr looking to add a new one to your list, The Joe Rogan Experience is one you CANNOT sleep on.
While the interview definitely answered a few questions, it simultaneously posed new ones. I wasn’t a massive Kanye fan before claiming his actions were all about clout but this episode entirely changed my perception. Not sure if I’m a full Kanye convert and ready to attend a Sunday service, I think this interview humanized him a bit for me, and I’m sure many others. I’m interested to see how this all pans out over the next 4 years, especially in 2024 when Kanye runs again for President. Until then, I know what I’ll be doing…listening to The Joe Rogan Experience. This was my first time listening to the pod and I think he gained a new subscriber.
