Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin have teamed up to field a new NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as its driver. This is a monumental announcement to have a black majority owner of a NASCAR team featuring NASCAR’s only black driver and the black majority owner being arguably the most famous athlete in the history of sports.
NASCAR is not a diverse sport whatsoever and has been mired in racial controversy over the years. Michael Jordan has proven to be an astute businessman and I personally think this is going to be a homerun of an investment where everyone wins.
NASCAR will now be on the radar of so many people, including me, who never in a million years would have paid attention to its sport. Michael Jordan will make the sport culturally relevant for the first time ever.
The partnership came together because Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan both share North Carolina roots and have been close friends for years. They have golfed together for years and have shared multiple visits as friends to Las Vegas. The partnership seems natural and I think they are going to make a crapload of money together on this one.
Sponsorships are going to come flying in as every major corporation has mandates to promote diversity and inclusion and what better brand to be affiliated with than Brand Jordan.
It is also important to note that Denny Hamlin is one of the best drivers in NASCAR today. He still races for the Joe Gibbs racing team. To my knowledge this is the only sport where a star player can also own another team while still playing. That would be like Lebron James playing for the Lakers while owning the Cleveland Cavaliers.
I never thought I’d be saying that I am excited for the future of NASCAR and look forward to following this team!
