As a citizen of the South the thought of not having a College Football season is possibly the scariest thing I’ve heard all year. If you are not a sports fan or only an NFL fan I don’t think you know how much College Football means in the South. Sure there are colleges that play all across the country but its religion here. It dictates every Saturday in the Fall and Winter. No cap the Auburn vs Bama rivalry alone has caused destroying monuments, countless divorces and a troubling amount of murders.
As we are weeks away from the typical season start and I’m not feeling to confident we’ll have any version of college football. At first it was looking like we would have conference play but this past weeks news and rumors make even that fantasy look bleak. Here are some of the major events pertaining to CFB:
Gamblers favorite conference the MAC was the first to cancel the season late last week. Although they were the first to cancel sports for the Fall, we were all waiting for one of the big brothers to announce their cancellations.
The Big Ten conference is one of the top five conferences (aka “Power Five”) in CFB with huge programs such as Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. The presidents of the conference were rumored to have a vote this morning to cancel the season although they have declined that ever happened. Michigan’s head coach Jim Harbaugh has made a case as to why they should still have the season. The conference is supposed to release an official statement tomorrow.
2019 National Champion and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence posted a really well thought out rationale as to why the season should continue. He argues that many players are much better suited with first-class university resources than at their own homes. Many players come from bad situations and have no access to good healthcare or even testing. Another reason is that for many athletes, this is the lottery ticket out of those bad situations. Many other players shared this sentiment and messaging via social media.
Donny will never miss a chance to throw his two cents in and quote tweeted Trevor Lawrence earlier today saying “The student-athletes have been working too hard for their season to be cancelled. #WeWantToPlay” Obviously college football fans fall into Trump’s key demographic of people who live in more rural environments. Combine that with him desperately trying to ignore anything the COVID has affected, this was a no-brainer for him.
I believe there is too many odds stacked against College Football for there to be a season this year. Primarily there is the money issue of forcing non-payed student athletes to put their life on the line. It’s too much to ask from these kids, if they were making a paycheck then possibly but the NCAA will do anything to not pay these kids. Additionally there are too many non-football school officials that have a say in this. As much as this hurts to say it looks like I will not be spending my Saturday’s getting day drunk and yelling at young adults that are much more talented than me…
